Wikipedia:Dead-end pages

Shortcut:
WP:DEP

This is a list of dead-end pages (see the listing for the date it was last updated). The pages on this list contain no internal links to other Wikipedia articles. Most of these pages need an editor to wikify them. The links' purpose is to build the web, but one must remember to only make links that are relevant to the context. Useful tools to help adding internal links are the wikifyer (look out for the allwiki effect), and Nickj's Can We link it? tool.

This list is very long, so it has been split into sub-pages.

  1. Download the most recent dump of the Wikipedia database from download.wikimedia.org. For the English version of Wikipedia, select the entry labeled "enwiki."
  2. Uncompress the database with bzip2. Other uncompression software may fail silently. You need the file called "enwiki-nnnnnn-pages-articles.xml.bz2" - as of July 2008, this was about 4.0 Gbytes, and uncompresses to 17.7 Gbytes.
  3. Install and start AutoWikiBrowser.
  4. In the Tools menu, choose "Database scanner".
  5. In the Wiki Database Scanner window that appears, select "File" from the menu, and select the XML file which bzip2 extracted. This file will be named in the format of "enwiki-20061130-pages-articles.xml" in regards to the date it was created.
  6. In the dropdown labeled "No. of links" select "Less than:" and change the corresponding number to 1.
  7. Check the boxes labeled "Are regexes" and "Does not contain:" and in the corresponding text field add "{{deletedpage|{{softredirect|{{wi}}" (without the quotation marks), a regular expression which filters out pages which contain the "deleted page," "softredirect," and "see Wiktionary" templates. This will reduce the number of results significantly.
  8. Click the button labeled "Start," and wait for the program to finish.
  9. Click the button marked "Sort" to alphabetize the list.
  10. On the right side of the window labeled "Make wikified list from results," check the box which says "A B C... headings" and click the button labeled "Make."
  11. Click the button labeled "Copy to clipboard" and paste your results to the proper places.
