The upper lip covers the anterior surface of the body of the maxilla. It is referred to as the vermillion.

It is raised by the Levator labii superioris.

The upper lip, or vermillion, can be thinned by using the teratogen alcohol during pregnancy, which can result in Fetal alcohol syndrome, a life-long disability.
