A term sometimes used as a translation of the term tamei in the Hebrew Bible. In Judaism, Tamei refers to a state of ritual impurity requiring purification through immersion in a Mikvah, and in the days of the Temple in Jerusalem other forms of ritual purification, such as the Red Heifer ceremony. The term is also used for types of animals which are always tamei.
In Islam, a state which may require ablutions, or ritually impure food. (See Halal).
