Sneek received city rights in 1456. The city is well known for its Waterpoort (lit. Water gate) and the Sneekweek, a yearly sailing festival. Sneek is one of the eleven cities of the Elfstedentocht.

In 1519\1520, the famous Frisian warlord and freedom fighter Pier Gerlofs Donia, last King of Frisia spend his last days in Sneek. Donia died peacefully in bed at Grootzand 121 on 18 October 1520.2 Pier is buried in Sneek in the 15th-century Groote Kerk (also called the Martinikerk).3 His tomb is located on the north side of the church.4

This quaint little city has a wonderful shopping center that is walker and biker friendly. There are high end clothing stores, nice restaurants, bars, music stores, cafes, and neat little coffee shops and an old fashion candy store.
