List of ammonites

A variety of ammonite forms, from Ernst Haeckel's 1904 Kunstformen der Natur.

This list of ammonites is an attempt to create a comprehensive listing of all genera that have ever been included in the subclass †Ammonoidea, excluding purely vernacular terms. The list includes all commonly accepted genera, but also genera that are now considered invalid, doubtful (nomina dubia), or were not formally published (nomina nuda), as well as junior synonyms of more established names, and genera that are no longer considered ammonites.

The list currently contains 2,356 generic names.

Naming conventions and terminology

Naming conventions and terminology follow the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Technical terms used include:

Reliability of this List

Most of the generic names in this list were taken from Jack Sepkoski's 2002 compendium of marine fossil genera. As such, ammonite genera discovered since the time of its publication may be missing. Ammonite genera that never made it to Sepkoski's list (such as Paradeshayesites) also may not have been added to this list. Because of the large number of ammonite genera, and how poorly known they are, not to mention the number of invalid and synonymous genera, this list may never perfectly reflect the true number of described ammonites, however, it is one of the most comprehensive lists on the subject available.
